The National Pet Register helps Lady find her way home...

When Erin’s family dog Jim passed away a little while ago, he understandably left a hole in the family they felt could never be filled. He had been around all of Erin’s life.

However, after a period of grief Erin and her family felt it was time to fill their beloved Jim’s place with a new, little bundle of joy, Lady, a one-year old English Staffy.

Lady has since become the funniest thing around their home.

“Lady’s a brilliant girl. She is so playful and can certainly hold her own. The only problem we’ve had with her is getting her used to walking in the street and generally out in public, but as she gets older she’s getting better at it,” said Erin.

The family often visits relatives outside of Bendigo and made the trip at Easter. Naturally, as part of the family Lady goes with them and just loves the open space, embracing the sense of freedom.

The Donohoe family have had Lady microchipped and registered with the National Pet Register, which is owned and operated by The Lost Dogs’ Home.

Knowing she is microchipped gives them peace of mind that should Lady get over-excited and lose her way that she will be identifiable through her National Pet Register tag and microchip.

“We’ve had to use the National Pet Register in the past when Lady thought it’d be a fun idea to head off from us at the beach one day; and just keep going,” laughed Erin, “We couldn’t find her for about an hour until we got a text message telling us someone we actually knew that lived nearby had found and was holding her. It was very lucky.”

As it turned out this Easter once again the exuberant and inquisitive Lady did in fact go off exploring and was distracted by the sights and smells of the country.

She hadn’t travelled far but her National Pet Register tag helped Erin find Lady and get her home safely.

“We later found out she was barking at the cows in one of the neighbour’s paddocks away from the house, so we had no idea what was happening until we got another text message saying the neighbours had her. They weren’t particularly pleased, but at least we got Lady back safe and sound,” explained Erin.

The family believe that making sure that Lady always wears her National Pet Register tag and the fact she is microchipped, has proven to be one of the best moves the family has ever made when it comes to keeping their eye on their ‘silly girl’.
