Elly’s looking for a new home

Eight month old German Shorthaired Pointer mix Elly came to The Lost Dogs' Home with a very serious injury to one of her front legs.

“Elly had a severe, deep gash which encircled her leg, right at the top. It wasn’t a recent injury but it still gaped open.

It had stopped the nerve supply so the leg was sadly unsalvageable. In order to save her life we knew the leg had to be amputated,” said Dr Caroline Cooke, who performed surgery on Elly.

“There’s no way of knowing how Elly was injured. It could have been done intentionally, like someone wrapping a rubber band around her leg and leaving it for months, or she could have sustained it if she tried to escape from somewhere. Whatever the case, she would have been in constant pain, but amazingly it didn’t dampen her spirits: she’s very gentle and loves cuddles.”

Elly has recovered well from last week’s surgery and is now available to adopt from our North Melbourne shelter.

“Elly is a sweet dog. She’s happy and very friendly. The only trouble we’re having is finding her a dog coat that doesn’t slip off with only one front leg,” said Sandra, dog adoptions co-ordinator at North Melbourne.

“She’s very bird focused and will need ongoing training to help curb this behaviour. She’s a fairly active dog and still young, so her new owner will need to dedicate time to training and exercising her.”

If you would like to welcome Elly into your home, please call (03) 9329 2755 and quote Animal ID 863112. Elly is desexed, vaccinated, wormed, microchipped and has been heartworm tested. Like all dogs and pups from North Melbourne, she also receives a free post-adoption training session with Planet K9.
